I am His Art

Recently, I've challenged myself to do "30 Days of Play". The challenge is for me to engage with music every day. Something I've seen as a result is other people in my life getting inspired to play music, paint, and more. This is exciting to me because I know that creativity was invented by God himself. We are God's creation, after all. Just like the trees, the ocean, and the creatures on earth whose existence we haven't even discovered yet, WE are His art! And His art is in us.
The vast nature of His beauty and splendor is something far too big for us to understand; But I like to imagine it as a stunning, stained glass window. This stained glass window represents God's very own craftsmanship, artwork, and creativity. He could have kept this window locked in Heaven for Himself. But instead, He chose to shatter this window into trillions and trillions of pieces. And in this imaginary illustration of mine, He said, "I will spread these pieces of Me and My Art throughout all of creation by giving one piece to each of My people." So He gave one piece to me. He gave one piece to you. He gave one piece to your neighbor, and so on.
He took a piece of His stained glass masterpiece and placed it quietly into the uniqueness of who you are. Why? Is it only so that we can make beautiful things? No, it's purpose extends far beyond that.
This piece of art that you carry inside you has the power to provide a glimpse of our Wondrous, Majestic God.
It helps us understand one more piece of His character and how deeply He loves us. We all have the honor and duty of uncovering our little piece of stained glass, holding it up to the light, and saying, "This is a piece of our great big God. This is one, small reflection of who He is." And if we pursue art and music in this way, our creativity can be a pursuit of our Creator.
The purpose of my illustration is to explain this: We each carry this piece of God's creativity within us. He gave it to us so that we could create too! We can make music and art and express the deepest stirrings of our soul, all because God allowed us to carry pieces of His creativity within us. But furthermore, this creativity is here so that we can know Him more. And we can get a little closer to understanding what it means to be created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26).
And the fact that we get to share in His creativity demonstrates how generously He loves us.
This truth is something that creative people must realign with on a regular basis. It is so easy for us to get lost in the eyes of others. I've seen firsthand as a teacher and a musician myself that we all want validation. We want to know that what we're doing is good. It's easy to want the 'likes', the 'views', and the reassurance that your performance is valuable to others. Not getting the part is hard. Being overlooked for the solo is hard. Wondering what people REALLY think of you is hard! We must remember that this music of mine and that performance of yours was never our own creation in the first place. It is but a piece of His glory... And it is certainly not the foundation of our worth.
Our worth, instead, is this:
We - in and of ourselves, just as we are - are God's Art.
Any creative gifts we have are not truly ours. Instead, they're much more. They are pieces of God's precious creativity, which He has entrusted to us. And the best musicianship we could bring is still just one small piece of a bigger, significantly more beautiful work of Art. And surely we will see it clearly in Heaven when He makes all things new (Revelation 21:5) and we see Him face to face.
While this concept is interesting and comforting, what does it matter? How should it change your life today? The answer lies in understanding who God still is today. Each morning when I wake up, my view of the sunrise is a bit different than the day before. Why?
Because God's creativity wasn't just one instance at the beginning of time.
It was not a temporary role He filled in order to create the world. Rather, creativity is interwoven into His character. Each morning He says, "Again. I will make the sun rise again, and I will put breath in their lungs again."
The fact that today, God still said "Again," means that I must also say, "Again." Again, I will hold my one small piece of stained glass up to the light, with the hope of seeing Him a bit better. I will magnify it in a room by myself with music heard only by Him. I will be creative today - not because I hope people will like it. Not because I stand to gain anything through that creativity.
But simply because I am God's creation, designed to be like Him.
So no matter what His will is for this art in me, I will create.

Hey, I'm Jenny. I songwrite, perform, and teach. I help singers break through vocal barriers, rock auditions, and become one-take vocalists. I love making great singing easier and more attainable than you thought it could be. This blog is my place to dig into vocal technique and unpack what it takes to connect and communicate honestly with an audience.
Everything about my musicianship and teaching is outside-the-box, instinctive, and fun. That's what makes this such a great place to hang out. I invite you to stay a while, check out my music, and see how this blog can impact your vocal skills and refresh your love for performing.
